Brewster 61, Oroville 43
Game 6.
(Championship, both to state)
At Brewster, WA
Energy, or the lack of it was the key
factor in the North Central District 1A championship games Saturday.
The semifinal winners were rested since neither had to play a tough game
Friday. All of the district championship teams were going to the State 1A
tourney, starting Wednesday in Yakima’s SunDome.
The Brewster boys accomplished a bit of history by winning a fourth
straight North Central District "A" boys basketball title. The Bears defeated Oroville 61-43
to gain the district’s No. 1 seed into state. The Hornets were coming
off an eight-point victory against Lake Roosevelt the night before.
The first quarter was an emphasis for the defending district champions. In
previous games, Oroville had the early lead.
“They’ve jumped on us pretty good before,” Brewster senior Hawkins
Gebbers said. “We didn’t want that to happen again.”
It didn’t, as the Bears jumped ahead 18-9 in the first quarter. Gebbers
opened the Bears’ scoring with a 3-pointer, part of his nine points in
the first quarter.
“It’s tough to play against Brewster with fresh legs,” Oroville
coach Matt Thacker said. “Playing them when they have fresh legs
and you don’t, that’s really tough.”
It was the Hornet’s fourth game in eight days, one more than Brewster.
Oroville senior had the burden of the busy schedule and special attention
from the Bear defenders.
Davis scored 42 points in the semifinal, tying the all-time tourney record
(by fellow Hornet Chris Hancock in 1983). Brewster opened with
junior Robert Pendergraft guarding Davis.
“Robert was the only guy who slowed Davis down the other night,”
Brewster coach Tim Taylor said. “He stays on the ground and
that’s what we needed against Davis.”
Pendergraft was among several players rotating defensive duties against
Davis. The Hornet senior was scoreless until 40 seconds left in the first
half.
Davis’ inside shot was part of a 6-0 spurt to close out the first half.
A buzzer-beating trey by Zack Kinman moved Oroville within 10.
Brewster put the game away with an 18-12 advantage in the third quarter.
Six Bears scored including junior Michael Taylor’s flying
baseline lay-up, showing how much he’s healed from a sprained ankle
keeping him out of six games in the middle of the season.
“It was tough being out, real tough but other guys were able to play,”
Taylor said. “That’s helping us now.”
Eight Bears scored, led by Hawkins Gebbers with 19 to go along with
10 rebounds while Taylor had 11 points and seven assists.
For Oroville, Davis finished with 10 points and Kinman nine.
