Cascade (7-13) @ Cashmere (16-2)
Game 2.
7:00pm

Ever since the Cashmere boys basketball squad ascended to the top spot in the Associated Press 1A state poll four weeks ago, the Bulldogs have known that in order to keep on winning and hold on to that lofty ranking that they must be prepared for every opponent’s absolute best effort. Now that the playoffs are here, Cashmere’s players know that their games from here on out will be even more intense.
That was certainly the case in the Bulldogs’ Caribou Trail League first-round district contest Thursday against Cascade at Ron Doane Gymnasium. Even though Cashmere was up by as many as 18 points in the second half en route to a 55-41 victory, the Bulldogs never really felt comfortable with their lead. Cashmere was, in the words of coach Keith Boyd, “out of sync” for most of the game, and the Kodiaks put forth one of their best efforts of the year, especially considering the they were without leading scorer Tyler Harrod, out with a broken foot.
“We have to be ready to (for our opponents’ best efforts) in the playoffs. That will determine how far we go,” Boyd said. “These games are intense and physical. I feel good that our kids have the (postseason) experience from last year, but we need to be physical, and play smarter than we did tonight.”
Forward Trenton Johnson, who was one of four Bulldogs players in double figures with 10 points, said he expected Cascade to give his squad a tough battle even without Harrod.
“We know they always play hard,” said Johnson, who led Cashmere with five assists. “We knew that we had to be prepared. They had a good crowd (behind them), good energy, and they felt like they were going to be able to stay in the game. These types of games are always exciting, and we came out really amped up and ready to go, and we weren’t able to stay calm. We wanted to play our best in this atmosphere, but it was hard for us to get (our intensity) to where it needed to be.”
In the first, third and fourth quarters, Cashmere outscored Cascade by just three, but in the second period the Bulldogs played to their strengths, using pressure defense, aggressive rebounding and an up-tempo transition game to outscore the Kodiaks 17-6. After Cashmere took a 41-23 lead with just over three minutes left in the third quarter, Cascade got to within eight with just less than three minutes remaining in the game, but could get no closer.
Marcos Trevino led three Kodiaks in double figures with 14 points, 12 coming in the second half.
“They started to bury us, but we scrapped and clawed and gave ourselves an opportunity,” said Cascade coach Paul Fraker. “Our defensive effort was exceptional, but their offensive rebounding killed us. On several possessions they got two or three good looks, and that was the difference in the game.”
