Game 1.
At Okanogan High School

Tonasket was happy to gain a measure of revenge over the team that spoiled its splendid record last year and was stumbling block to the Tigers' quest for a state tournament berth in 1964.
"We lost to Quincy last year (in the championship game) because we did not shoot well from outside against their zone," said Tonasket coach Martin Anzelini. "We went right home and started working on it."
The Tigers got their outside shooting Friday night from Virgil Newton and Jack Gavin, forcing the Jacks to loosen up inside.
The Jackrabbits and Tigers engaged in a classic struggle in the first half, but Tonasket broke up the game in the opening minutes of the second half as Quincy's defense moved out to try to stop the Tiger guards.
Tonasket's press rattled the Jackrabbits in the opening minutes, causing them to throw the ball away the first three times they had possession.  Two minutes had elapsed before Quincy got its first shot.
Then the Jackrabbits began to roll and quickly caught up, creating a tight, see-saw struggle.
Only the spectacular outside shooting of Newton kept the Tigers in contention.  He made four field goals from long range, giving Tonasket a 14-13 quarter-ending lead.
Quincy then rolled in seven straight points to go ahead, 20-14. But, the Jackrabbits attack hit a snag and they went scoreless for about seven minutes.
Meantime, during the last three minutes of the first half, Tonasket was taking command.  Jack Gavin and Newton provided the impetus with their outside shooting as the Tigers moved to a 26-22 halftime lead.
The Tigers' momentum carried into the second half and, with less than three minutes gone, they had a 33-22 lead. Quincy never got closer than nine points thereafter.
Both coaches, Anzelini and Bob Woodworth, played their starters nearly all the way.
Newton's 16 points topped the scoring, while left-handed guard Mike Flanagan was high for Quincy with 13.

Quincy (14-6) - Field 7, Livengood 2, Boorman 8, Flanagan 13, Jones 11, Lillquist 2, Stewart, Hall 5, Whitting, Urwin.

Oroville captures first-ever district title

Oroville climaxed a great season by winning the North Central District basketball championship and an invitation to the State A tourney, opening Wednesday in Tacoma, by defeating Cashmere in the title game here Friday night in front of an overflowing crowd.
The strong play of Oroville's two big inside men, Ken Scacco and Mike Bourn was decisive in the championship game.
The Hornets broke a 2-2 tie on a basket by Pat Siegrist and never trailed.  The outside shooting of Bob Howe against the Cashmere zone in the second quarter broke the game open.
Howe connected for five field goals, four from long range, in that second period to send the Hornets winging to a 25-17 halftime lead.
Two rebounds by Scacco at the outset of the second half lengthened the margin to 12 points and Cashmere could never get closer than five points thereafter.
Despite a flurry of eight straight points by Bourn in the latter part of the third quarter, the Bulldogs crept to within five points on five occasions, the last time at 42-37 just before the mid-point of the fourth quarter. Oroville coach Don Hughes team was in complete control during the last three minutes.
Although Hughes felt that Bourn wasn't quite up to par, big Mike and Scacco formed a tremendous combination around the boards.
The rangy duo controlled the boards and gave Oroville numerous repeat shots.  The rebound count was: Oroville 42, Cashmere 27.
Cashmere shot exceptionally well, making seven-of-eight shots, n that crucial third period, but their meager shot production was hardly sufficient to offset Oroville's offensive board strength.
For the game, Oroville made 21-of-56 attempts and Cashmere hit on 16-of-47.
Bourn and Scacco shared game scoring honors with 17 points apiece and Howe chipped in with 13.
Oroville coach Hughes said the Cashmere zone did give his team some problems and felt that, because of the zone, his Hornets did not show their best.

Cashmere (11-9) - Doane 7, Dugwyler 13, Rasmussen 4, Meredith 10, Green 3, Coates, Adkins, Spies, French, Bailey.
Oroville (17-4) - K. Scacco 17, Howe 3, Siegrist 4, Bourn 17, Cox, Dull, Corrigan, M. Scacco, Jones, Mathews 2.

Green's howitzer denies Tigers state bid

Cashmere battled its way into the State Class A basketball tournament for the second straight time in three years by edging Tonasket in a dramatic struggle for the North Central District's number two spot here Saturday night.
Dick McLaren's Cashmere team joins district champion Oroville as North Central Washington representatives in the state tournament, opening Wednesday in Tacoma.
A 20-footer by senior guard Scott Green with six seconds to play decided the district's second-place battle and jolted Tonasket's state-tourney hopes for the second straight year.
Five points was the widest margin in this tense and stirring struggle. The lead changed ownership on 12 occasions and the score was tied five times.
A basket by Rod Zabreznik put Martin Anzelini's club in front, 11-10, at the close of the first period.  Then the Bulldogs responded with three - quick baskets, two by Dave Dugwyler and one by Clarke Meredith, to move out to a 16-11 lead. Tonasket chopped that to 22-21 by halftime.
The lead see-sawed through the early part of the third quarter before Tonasket gradually began to gain control. The Tigers built a 34-29 lead and clung to a slim margin until 4:50 remained in the contest.  Cashmere regained the lead at this stage on a basket by Green.
A free throw by Virgil Newton put Tonasket back on top, 41-40, with 1:14 to play. Both teams missed free throws in the final minute.  Cashmere gained control after a Tonasket miss with 17 seconds to play and began to work for that final fateful shot.
Dugwyler and Green led the scoring with 14 and 12 points respectively.  Tonasket scoring was divided evenly among seven players.

Tonasket (18-2) - Newton 6, Jack Gavin 2, Rampley 7, Larrabee 7, Zabreznik 9, K. Michels 2, B. Michels 8.
Cashmere (11-10) - Doane 6, Dugwyler 14, Meredith 6, Green 12, Rasmussen, Adkins 4, French, Coates.
