Liberty Bell shocks Omak girls |
WATERVILLE - Defending district champion Omak was
upended by Liberty Bell, 45-43, here Friday night, climaxing a day
of tension-packed first round action in the North Central District girls basketball tournament. |
Liberty Bell 45, Omak 43 - Liberty Bell boys
basketball coach Gene Nelson has Rodney Paul and Liberty Bell girls coach
Paul Arneson has Christy Paul. Christy pumped in 13 points and
Joni Haugen
and Julie Wilson combined for 16 to spark the Lions to its upset win. |
The game was close all the way, with neither
team getting the upper hand. |

playing an important role for the Pioneers.

| Cashmere 35, Coulee City 24 - This contest was a
study of contrast changing momentum. Cashmere bolted to a 10-3 first
quarter lead and upped the count to 21-12 by halftime. |
| Mysteriously, the Bulldogs went cold, going the entire
third quarter without a point, during which the Coulee City Chargers tied
it all up, 21-21. |
| But just as quickly, Cashmere regained its shooting touch
and won comfortably. Coulee City managed only three points in the fourth
quarter. |
| Cashmere's sharp defensive work undoubtedly was the big
factor. No Coulee City player reached double figures. |
Annette Whitaker led this veteran, tourney-tested Bulldog
team, third in the state tourney last year, with 16 points.
| Coulee City (24) -
Nutt 2, Knopp 3, Larsen 2, Brown 6, Elder 6, Major 4. |

Cashmere girls to face rival Ephrata
for title |

registering semifinal victories here Saturday night. |
Those two clubs, big rivals during the last
two seasons as the main title contenders in the Caribou Trail League's
south race, collide here Wednesday night at 8:30pm to decide the district
championship and the number one seed in the state tournament. |
Cashmere 54, Lake Roosevelt 38 - Diane
Kenoyer, with three field goals, and Annette Whitaker, with
four, led Cashmere to a 14-3 first quarter cushion against the Raider
girls and the Bulldogs held off the Coulee Dam club the rest of the way. |

quarter before departing with a sprained ankle. Kenoyer finished with 15
points, and Julie Holmer, collecting 10 in the second half,

| Ephrata 44, Liberty Bell 39 - The Lions gave Ephrata
a surprising tussle and, in fact, led through the early going. It wasn't
until three minutes remained in the first half that Nina Kuhlman sent
Ephrata into the lead, at 22-21. |
| |
| The lead bounced around several times late in the third
quarter and early in the fourth period before Ephrata suddenly spurted to
a seven point, 41-34, advantage. |
| |
| But again Liberty Bell came
back, shaving the Ephrata lead to 41-39. Teresa Smick, scoring the final
five points of the game, finally wrapped up the win for Ephrata. She
finished with 18 points, 11 of those in the final period. |
| |
Christy Paul, a clutch player
who led Liberty Bell's comeback efforts, totaled 13 points. Julie Wilson
added 11 to the Lions' total.

points in the third quarter, went ahead, 29-28 at the buzzer. Deanna
Haynes twice lifted the Cougars into ties, the last time at 42-all
with 40 seconds remaining. |
| |
| Again, it was Haynes scoring
to give P-D the lead in overtime. But Lindy Holt tied the score for
Omak and Joleen Orr scored the game winning points on two free
throws. |

The Cougars were led by
Haynes' 17 points and Janeen Valentine's 16.

Omak girls advance in district play,
nips Lake Roosevelt
| WATERVILLE - Omak stayed alive in the battle for a state
tourney berth by winning a survival test in the girls North Central
District basketball tournament with a 38-37 donnybrook win over Lake
Roosevelt. |
| This battle was a thriller all the way.
Joleen Orr's basket
with just seven seconds remaining brought Omak from behind, gave the
Pioneer's the victory and left the Raiders a disappointed loser. |
| Omak led by as much as five points, the largest margin of
the game, in the third quarter, but Lake Roosevelt rallied to tie the
score early in the fourth quarter. |
It was tied two more times before the Raiders went ahead,
37-36, on a three-point play by Lori Snyder with 17 seconds remaining.

Ephrata girls grasp district
title, Omak eliminated |
WATERVILLE - A 30-foot howitzer,
unloaded in desperation to beat the clock, by Jill Palmquist
perhaps keyed a fourth-quarter take-over that carried Ephrata to a
stunning, 47-36, victory over the Cashmere Bulldogs in the finals of the
North Central District girls basketball championship here Wednesday night. |
With the triumph, Ephrata claimed the
district's number one spot in the State Class 'A' basketball tournament to
be held at Central Washington University February 16-19. |
Palmquist, who seemed to be oblivious to the
time until alerted by frantic cries of "shoot... shoot,"
provided the impetus Ephrata needed with her desperation howitzer that
dropped through as the third quarter buzzer sounded. |
Ephrata, down by as much as eight points on a
couple of occasions, had been creeping up. But when fourth-quarter
play started the Tigers really went to work, tying the score on a steal
and cripple by all-valuable Teresa Smick, knotting the score again
on a fine feed by Smick, then taking a never-to-be-surrendered lead at
35-34 on a free throw by Nina Kuhlman. |
It wasn't until two and a half minutes
remained, though, that Ephrata gained a bit of breathing room, a six point
lead, on Smick's dash down floor following a steal, to sink another
lay-in cripple. |
In the final minutes and a half, Ephrata just
pulled away as Cashmere fought frantically but futilely. |
How did Ephrata coach Van Morgan
account for this amazing turn-around when it seemed that Cashmere was
pretty well in control through much of the game. |
"I told them not to give up," said
Morgan. "You're defense will win it, and it did." |
Ephrata was beaten by Cashmere twice during
the regular season. "Jan Giffin (Cashmere) beat us last
time," said Ephrata assistant coach Ed Hamlett. "We
shut her off (tonight)." Ephrata's zone defense was designed to
seal off the middle. |
Giffin, Cashmere's 5-11 pivot, did not score a
point in the championship game. |
With Annette Whitaker pumping in three
field goals and scoring eight points total during the period, Cashmere
took command, 24-18, in the second quarter. That lead, fairly substantial,
held up until the late stages of the third period. |
Whitaker collected 18 points and Julie
Holmer, also a fine player for Cashmere, scored 10. |
Smick, a junior, led Ephrata with 15 points,
and Palmquist followed with 10.

| Coulee City 52, Omak 37 - The Chargers, fighting back from
an early 8-0 deficit trailed Omak until six and a half minutes remained in
the third quarter. |
| The Chargers reeled off 11 unanswered points during one
stretch of the third quarter to come from a 27-26 deficit to a commanding,
37-27 lead. |
| The third quarter was a disastrous eight minutes for the
Pioneers. Omak, which owned a 27-26 halftime lead, went scoreless until
twelve seconds remained in the third quarter. |
A couple of reserves, freshman Marla Deane and sophomore
Shelley Nutt, came off the bench to spark the Coulee City comeback.
Both
scored 11 points.

Chargers gain measure of revenge,
clinch state tourney spot |
WATERVILLE - After a tournament opening round loss to Cashmere, the Coulee
City Chargers latched onto the North Central District's number two state
tournament berth by upsetting the Bulldogs, 38-35, here Thursday night. |
Cashmere, a third-place finisher in the state tourney last season, just
couldn't get untracked - after a tough championship tussle with Ephrata
last night - against the tenacious Chargers. |
It was tight all the way, Cashmere held the biggest advantage of the
evening, 28-22, in the third quarter, then seemed to wilt. Coulee City
came on strong in the late going. |

Cashmere's Annette Whitaker was the game's high scorer with 18.
