a sprained ankle. Kenoyer finished with 15 points, and Julie Holmer,

Omak 38, Lake
Roosevelt 37
Game 9. (Loser out)
At Waterville, WA
Omak stayed alive in the
battle for a state tourney berth by winning a survival test in the
girls North Central District basketball tournament with a 38-37
donnybrook win over Lake Roosevelt.
This battle was a thriller all the way. Joleen Orr's basket
with just seven seconds remaining brought Omak from behind, gave the
Pioneer's the victory and left the Raiders a disappointed loser.
Omak led by as much as five points, the largest margin of the game,
in the third quarter, but Lake Roosevelt rallied to tie the score
early in the fourth quarter.
It was tied two more times before the Raiders went ahead, 37-36, on
a three-point play by Lori Snyder with 17 seconds remaining.

Coulee City 52, Omak
37
Game 11. (Loser out)
At Waterville, WA
The Chargers, fighting
back from an early 8-0 deficit trailed Omak until six and a half
minutes remained in the third quarter.
The Chargers reeled off 11 unanswered points during one stretch of
the third quarter to come from a 27-26 deficit to a commanding,
37-27 lead.
The third quarter was a disastrous eight minutes for the Pioneers.
Omak, which owned a 27-26 halftime lead, went scoreless until twelve
seconds remained in the third quarter.
A couple of reserves, freshman Marla Deane and sophomore Shelley
Nutt, came off the bench to spark the Coulee City comeback. Both
scored 11 points.

Ephrata 47, Cashmere
36
Game 12. (Championship, winner to state)
At Waterville, WA
A 30-foot howitzer,
unloaded in desperation to beat the clock, by Jill Palmquist
perhaps keyed a fourth-quarter take-over that carried Ephrata to a
stunning, 47-36, victory over the Cashmere Bulldogs in the finals of
the North Central District girls basketball championship here
Wednesday night.
With the triumph, Ephrata claimed the district's number one spot in
the State Class 'A' basketball tournament to be held at Central
Washington University February 16-19.
Palmquist, who seemed to be oblivious to the time until alerted by
frantic cries of "shoot... shoot," provided the impetus
Ephrata needed with her desperation howitzer that dropped through as
the third quarter buzzer sounded.
Ephrata, down by as much as eight points on a couple of occasions,
had been creeping up. But when fourth-quarter play started the
Tigers really went to work, tying the score on a steal and cripple
by all-valuable Teresa Smick, knotting the score again on a
fine feed by Smick, then taking a never-to-be-surrendered lead at
35-34 on a free throw by Nina Kuhlman.
It wasn't until two and a half minutes remained, though, that
Ephrata gained a bit of breathing room, a six point lead, on Smick's
dash down floor following a steal, to sink another lay-in cripple.
In the final minutes and a half, Ephrata just pulled away as
Cashmere fought frantically but futilely.
How did Ephrata coach Van Morgan account for this amazing
turn-around when it seemed that Cashmere was pretty well in control
through much of the game.
"I told them not to give up," said Morgan. "You're
defense will win it, and it did."
Ephrata was beaten by Cashmere twice during the regular season.
"Jan Giffin (Cashmere) beat us last time," said
Ephrata assistant coach Ed Hamlett. "We shut her
off (tonight)." Ephrata's zone defense was designed to
seal off the middle.
Giffin, Cashmere's 5-11 pivot, did not score a point in the
championship game.
With Annette Whitaker pumping in three field goals and
scoring eight points total during the period, Cashmere took command,
24-18, in the second quarter. That lead, fairly substantial, held up
until the late stages of the third period.
Whitaker collected 18 points and Julie Holmer, also a fine
player for Cashmere, scored 10.
Smick, a junior, led Ephrata with 15 points, and Palmquist followed
with 10.

Coulee City 38,
Cashmere 35
Game 13. (Winner to state, loser out)
At Waterville, WA
After a tournament opening round loss to Cashmere, the Coulee
City Chargers latched onto the North Central District's number two state
tournament berth by upsetting the Bulldogs, 38-35, here Thursday night.
Cashmere, a third-place finisher in the state tourney last season, just
couldn't get untracked - after a tough championship tussle with Ephrata
last night - against the tenacious Chargers.
It was tight all the way, Cashmere held the biggest advantage of the
evening, 28-22, in the third quarter, then seemed to wilt. Coulee City
came on strong in the late going.
Cashmere's Annette Whitaker was the game's high scorer with 18.
