Omak 50, Lake Roosevelt 46
Game 3.
At Omak, WA

Lake Roosevelt's winning streak is over.
The Omak Pioneers, in a stunning performance, topped the high-flying Raiders in Saturday night's North Central District "A" girls basketball tournament.
Lake Roosevelt will play Quincy in a loser-out test next Friday, and the survivor will meet the Leavenworth-Omak loser on Saturday for the number two berth in the State "A" tournament at Central Washington University in Ellensburg (February 21-24).
Barbie Anderson scored six straight points early in the third period to give Omak a 39-28 advantage. The Pioneers, who had lost twice to league-champion Lake Roosevelt refused to wilt under a furious Raider comeback bid in the fourth quarter. The Raiders, performing without the direction of coach Carol Campbell, who was ejected from the game by the officials, never could get closer than four points in the final moments.
Teri Desautel, who scored Omak's first six points and Lori McCormack shared Pioneer scoring honors with 12 points apiece. Reserve Diane Parman added 10 points and starter Nancie Nilson netted eight.
Mary Mueller and Leslie Selle carried the offensive load for the Raiders, tallying 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Lake Roosevelt (9-1) - Boyd, Barnaby 4, Nissen 3, Mueller 17, Selle 16, Farver, Vargas 6.
Omak (8-3) - Anderson 6, Damskov, Desautel 12, McCormack 12, Nilson 8, Parman 10, Bucholtz 2, Dibble.

Kellee Knowles, who scored four points in that burst, led all scorers with 21 points and teammate Melissa Tupling added 10.
Tami Young gave the Jacks some hope, hitting a pair of baskets to bring Quincy to within four points late in the game. She finished with 10 points in a reserve role while Jill Zimbelman played a brilliant game, winding up with 18 points for Quincy.

Leavenworth 45, Omak 34
Game 6. (Championship, winner to state)
At Chelan, WA

Leavenworth responded to the pressure here Friday night and collected the North Central District "A" girls basketball championship and the number one state Class A tourney berth that goes with it.
When an underdog Omak team threatened the Leavenworth lead just past the mid-point of the fourth-quarter, the Grizzly-girls responded with their best offensive flurry of the night and rushed to a 45-34 victory in championship battle.
Omak, which reached the finals by surprising Lake Roosevelt a week ago, now has a return match with those same Raider girls at Omak tonight. The winner of that game will earn the district's number two berth in the state meet, opening Wednesday in Ellensburg.
"It got a little too close," said a relieved Leavenworth coach Howard Cook after his Grizzlies had beat the Omak challenge and snared the state berth that eluded them last year.
"We waited a year for it (the state trip)," said Cook, recalling the disappointment of a year ago. "We got knocked out by one point in the last two seconds by Liberty Bell."
The game here Friday night, in which Leavenworth earned its 17th win against three losses, was hardly an artistic success, but it may have helped the Grizzlies work out kinks before the open state tourney play.
It looked as if it were going to be a runaway as Leavenworth spurted to a 10-1 lead before Diane Parman connected for Omak's first field goal of the night. The game was already five minutes along when she found the target. And the Grizzlies were on top by 12 before the first quarter ended.
But Omak, which started in a "man-to-man" defense, switched to a 2-1-2 zone in the second period and things started going wrong for Leavenworth, which couldn't find the basket with perimeter shots.
Things weren't going much better for Omak, though, and the Pioneers couldn't gain much in spite of countless opportunities.
Finally, late in the third period, Teri Desautel led a bit of a surge that carried Omak to within three, 27-24, at one stage.
Leavenworth, able to score just four points in the third quarter, rebuilt its lead to seven points before Omak made that final threatening run at the Grizzlies. The Pioneers twice crept to within three points, 33-30, as Lori McCormack banged in four straight free throws. That's when Leavenworth, seemingly, said "Heck, girls, let's play some basketball."
Versatile floor leader Kellee Knowles lit the fuse with a field goal and Debbie Butler and Tracy Ostella quickly followed with rebound shots.
"We went a little cold against their zone," Cook noted. "We came back, though."
Balanced scoring, which showed 12 points each for Knowles and Melissa Tupling and 10 for Kayla Dyment caught Cook's approving eye.
"This has been our success all year long," he said of that good balance. "When somebody gets cold, somebody else picks it up."
The young and smallish Omak team (the Pioneers have 10 juniors) made only 12 field goals, with plenty of offensive opportunities. Desautel carried the Omak offensive burden with scoring 16 points.

Leavenworth (10-1) - Dyment 10, Ostella, Butler 4, Knowles 12, Martensen 7, Marson, Tupling 12, Magee, Blackburn, Hill.
Omak (8-4) - Anderson, Desautel 16, McCormack 9, Damskov, Nilson 2, Parman 2, Bucholtz 5, Freeman.

Lake Roosevelt 45, Omak 43
Game 7. (Winner to state, loser out)
At Omak, WA

Lake Roosevelt held off a late Omak charge and escaped with a 45-43 win over the Pioneers to claim second place in the North Central District "A" girls basketball tournament Friday night and earn a trip to the state tournament in Ellensburg.
The Raiders owned a 45-37 advantage with 3.30 minutes remaining, but couldn't score the rest of the way.
Two baskets by Teri Desautel and another by Lori McCormack brought the Pioneers to within two points with 1:36 left, and the Raiders missed three one-and-one free throw opportunities in the final minute. But Omak couldn't get the tying basket.
Leslie Selle paced the winners with 16 points, while Mary Michaud (8), Cheryl Barnaby (7), and Mary Mueller (6) were other key people for  the Raiders.
Desautel had 10 Pioneer points, and reserves Dawn Dibble and Sue Bucholtz had seven apiece. Omak reserves accounted for 20 of the Pioneers' 43 points.
The Raiders held a 10-point edge from the floor, but managed just nine of 29 free throws to a 17-of-32 foul line performance for the Pioneers.
The Raiders, who won the district title a year ago, had been consigned to the loser's bracket by a 50-46 setback to these same Pioneers a week ago.

Lake Roosevelt (11-1) - Selle 16, Barnaby 7, Mueller 6, Michaud 8, Vargas 2, Boyd 6, Farver.
Omak (8-5) - Anderson 5, Damskov, Desautel 10, McCormack 5, Nilson 3, Dibble 7, Dietrich 2, Bucholtz 7, Parman 4, Freeman.
