Tonasket 56, Chelan 50
-Game 4-
The Tonasket boys' basketball
team used a fourth-quarter surge to rally past Chelan 56-50 Thursday in
the North Central District 6 semifinals. On Saturday, the Tigers (13-8)
will face unbeaten Brewster, which held off Cashmere 45-36 in the other
semifinal.
Gerad Moser, the Caribou Trail's leading scorer at 18.4 points per
game, struggled most of the game for Tonasket with just two points through
the first three quarters. But he caught fire in the final period with
eight of his 10 points, giving the Tigers an 18-7 edge in the quarter.
"He had a tough time getting going, but he stepped up at the right
time," Tonasket coach Sol Jones said.
And stepping up at the right time was the name of the game for the Tigers.
Four Tonasket starters scored in double figures, led by Danny Stoddard
with 16. Stoddard hit three treys in the first half to keep them close
early, and Roy Osborne scored all 14 of his points in the second
half to keep them close late.
The Tigers were down by five with about three minutes to go in the final
quarter, then took the lead on a 6-0 run keyed by offensive rebounds and
putbacks by Moser and Jordan Wells. Each grabbed five boards on the
offensive end.
"That's 10 more shots we get at the hoop and that's huge," Jones
said. "We got the lead at the right time and the guys stepped up and
knocked down the free throws at the end."
Bill Buckingham led Chelan (13-9) with 14 points. Joe Harris,
the team's leading scorer, was held to just nine points. Cameron
Reister also added nine.
