Brewster 54, Tonasket 43
-Game 8-
The Brewster team that showed up
for the first two quarters of Saturday's North Central District
"A" boys basketball championship game was not the same Brewster
team that has maintained an undefeated record this season. Unfortunately
for Tonasket, that undefeated Brewster showed up in the second half.
The Bears outscored the Tigers 38-25 in the second half to come back from
a 18-16 halftime deficit and win the district championship 54-43.
Brewster's first-half troubles stemmed from 38 percent shooting from the
floor, Bears head coach Tim Taylor said. "We were getting a
lot of good shots in the first half," he said, "but we shot
poorly."
Luckily for the Brewster, defense bailed the team out. "Our defense
held (Tonasket) down to where we didn't dig a hole," Taylor said.
That strong defense carried over to the second half with the Bears'
full-court pressure creating turnovers and points in transition. "I
though our press was effective," Taylor said. "In the second
half we pressed a lot more aggressively and created a lot more
turnovers."
Austin Benson scored 15 points, Clay Gebbers scored 14
points and Rocky Gipson scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds
for Brewster. Roy Osborne scored 18 points and Gerad Moser
scored 11 points for the Tigers.
Brewster takes on Cascade at home Tuesday to begin regionals.
