Lake Roosevelt 40, Quincy 29
Game 11. (Loser out)
At Omak High School

For awhile, it looked like Lake Roosevelt might pull defeat out of the jaws of victory.
But cool heads prevailed, as the Raiders overcame a scrappy Quincy squad in a game full of turnovers and mistakes.
With the score knotted at 25-all at the six minute mark of the final period, Lake Roosevelt's Heidi Roberts hit a couple of crucial foul shots, and Glennis Ware followed with a jump shot to make the score 29-25. Quincy never got closer, setting the stage for tonight's game at Eastmont against Tonasket for the district's number two state berth.
The first half was marred by turnover after turnover. On his way to the locker-room, Lake Roosevelt coach Jay Runkel just shook his head and groaned heavily when asked about the miscues.
Lisa Barnaby led a Lake Roosevelt second-quarter blitz, swishing four perimeter shots, and giving the Raiders what looked like a comfortable 20-13 lead at intermission.
In the third quarter, Quincy finally got going and started using their superior size inside.
Guard Tami Young hit two baskets as Quincy narrowed the margin to 23-19 at the close of the period.
"We played with composure when we needed to," explained Runkel. He credited the inside play of the 5-10 Roberts as a real key to the game.
Being and undersized team, he said, has been one of the biggest obstacles the Raiders have faced all year.
Barnaby led all scorers with 14 points for Lake Roosevelt, including some crucial fourth-quarter free throws, and Roberts added 11.
For Quincy, Tami Young totaled nine points and 6-1 senior Kathy Konen ended her career with an eight-point performance.

Lake Roosevelt (17-6) - Barnaby 14, Frost 6, Roberts 11, Haugen, Ware 6, Pryor.

Cashmere 69, Tonasket 26
Game 12 (Championship)
At Omak High School

All right, Cashmere, start re-packing your suitcases.
Yes sir, the girls basketball squad is going to the State A tournament in Tacoma, as a deserving district champions, after thrashing Tonasket 69-26 at the Omak High School gymnasium Friday night.
"It's nice that somebody's going (to the tournament)," said Cashmere coach Sue Gasbar, referring to the Bulldog boy's team, which lost its bid for a berth on Thursday night.
And in the process, Gee Gee Goble, the high-scoring pivot for Cashmere, set a tournament record by going on a 27-point spree.
Goble, who hit most of her shots from the inside, also tied the record for the most field goals in a game, with 12.
Cashmere played like finely-tuned sports car, particularly in the second half when their swarming, hustling defense held Tonasket to only 12 points on five field goals. Rarely did the Tigers get an offensive rebound or even get inside for a shot. No stats were kept on blocked shots, but Cashmere must have had two dozen.
But the real sparkplug in this game was playmaking guard Shelly Strutzel, who poured in 12 points, stole 12 Tiger passes and came up with seven rebounds.
Strutzel was partly responsible for getting the Cashmere running game into gear during the second quarter, when the game looked like it might be close.
Tonasket coach Rod Armbruster, whose squad came from sixth place in the league to the district championship game, said his team usually rebounds well after a loss.
"We've come a lot farther than people expected we'd be," he said.

Cashmere (19-2) - Shelly Strutzel 12, Carrie Franklin 6, Fawnda Wannschaff 9, Michelle Robertson 2, Gee Gee Goble 27, Sheryl Parkins 8, Ruth Roys, Penny Shaffer, Yvonne Wixom 2, Robin Kirk 3, Val Gilmer 2.

Lake Roosevelt 50, Tonasket 40
Game 13. (Winner to state, loser out)
At Eastmont High School

The Lake Roosevelt Raiders have developed a serious habit. It's one they're not eager to break.
For the fourth straight year the Raiders have qualified for the girls State Class "A" basketball tournament.
"When they need to play well, they do," said Raider coach Jay Runkel of his girls.
Which is just what Lake Roosevelt did at Eastmont High Saturday night.
The win was the third straight for the Raiders, completing an impressive march through the losers bracket of the district tournament.
"It's a dirty job, but somebody had to do it," Runkel joked. "I'm pleased. They did a good job. They're getting better every game."
In defeating the Tigers, Lake Roosevelt jumped to a big early lead, withstood a Tonasket rally and pulled away late.
Center Heidi Roberts led Lake Roosevelt with 15 points, including nine in the first half when she hit four of five field goal attempts.
"Heidi's been doing that all year long," Runkel noted.
Speedy guard Marie Frost popped in 12 points. Guard Lisa Barnaby hit a perfect six of six free throws, and Glennis Ware drilled a pair of long set-shots in the first minute of the fourth quarter which helped the Raider lead.
Tonasket's Stacy McIntyre, as described by Runkel as "a heck of a player," rammed in a game-high 17 points, including 13 in the first half to keep the Tigers close.
Lake Roosevelt, which compiled a 18-6 record even though not having a single senior on its squad, will enter state tournament play against Zillah (17-6) at 7pm Wednesday at Pacific Lutheran University.

Lake Roosevelt (18-6) - Barnaby 8, Frost 12, Haugen, Ware 8, Roberts 15, Loe 7, Pryor.
