Tonasket 53, Cashmere 46
Game 1.
At Tonasket, WA

Tonasket trailing throughout the first half, rallied to knock off Cashmere in opening round action of the North Central District "A" girls basketball tournament here Tuesday night.
Tonasket's six-foot front line combined for 44 points. 6-0, junior Brenda Johnson scored 20 points to lead the Tigers.
Sophomores Kendra Curtis, 6-1, and Gloria Dugas, 6-0, added 14 and 10 points respectively. All three girls were credited with 13 rebounds apiece.
Gee Gee Goble and LaRae Smith scored 12 points each and Tracy Lautensleger had 10 for Cashmere.
"The key to the game was the third quarter," said Tonasket coach Bill Myhr. "We played well defensively in the third quarter. "Brenda Johnson played a good game inside for us," he added. He also noted that the Bulldogs' Gee Gee Goble was in foul trouble most of the evening.

Ephrata 54, Quincy 31
Game 2.
At Ephrata, WA

Ephrata pulled away in the second half to knock off arch-rival Quincy in opening round district tournament action.
Eleven girls contributed to a balanced Ephrata attack, with Chris Longworth's 10 points showing the way.
Peggy Weinand, Traci Schultz and Bee Downs all scored six points apiece to lead the cold-shooting Jackrabbits.
"Quincy played a very good first half against us," said Ephrata coach Don King. "But they got into foul trouble in the second half and we got our fast break going to pull away."

Okanogan 55, Lake Roosevelt 47
Game 3.
At Okanogan, WA

Lake Roosevelt took a 15-10 first quarter lead, but couldn't hold to the advantage against an Okanogan team they had beaten in last year's district championship game.
Beth Campbell scored 26 points, all in the last three quarters, to lead Okanogan.
Shanee Haugen tossed in 19 points to lead the Raiders, and Lisa Loe added 13.
"We started out playing a sagging man-to-man defense and they jumped out and took the lead," said Okanogan coach Dick Merriman. "We changed to a pressure defense where we keep constant pressure on the ball, not letting them get into their offense. After that we did well."

Lake Roosevelt (9-9) - Loe 13, Covington, Seaver 1, Parker 7, DePoe 3, Speck, Haugen 19, Hamilton, Kuiper 4.

Game 4.
At Winthrop, WA

Liberty Bell let a nine-point lead slip away and scored the final three points of the game in post a narrow win over Omak in a North Central District "A" girls basketball tournament game here Wednesday night.
The victory by the Caribou Trail League champions sends them up against Okanogan Saturday night at Eastmont Junior High.
Omak will play a survival game Saturday afternoon against Lake Roosevelt, also at Eastmont Junior High.
"We've been in a offensive slump the last four games," said Liberty Bell coach Lance Hope. "But if you're going to slump, I'd rather it be at the offensive end. We shut down Omak pretty well. Our forte' all year as been defense."

Omak (11-11) - Sirois 4, Whittle 7, Smith 15, Hansen, Goff, Edwards, George 1.

Cashmere's Gee Gee Goble sprained an ankle on Thursday and was ineffective in a limited appearance. It was a tough way for her to close out an otherwise illustrious four-year career.
Trying hard to pick up the slack were LaRae Smith, who scored 16 points, and Kim Hildebrand, who produced 15.

Ephrata 51, Tonasket 38
Game 7. (Semifinal)
At Eastmont Junior High

Ephrata coach Don King to a lot of mileage from his young talent off the bench. He rotated four guards who helped keep Tonasket off balance and received a big lift from 5-10 sophomore Michelle Tommer.
Tommer relieved foul-plagued freshman Mary Beth Nelson and led nine Ephrata scorers with 10 points.
"I think we got going a little quicker than Tonasket," said Ephrata coach King, whose Grant County Tigers jumped away to an 8-1 lead. "We got off to a good start."
Tonasket coach Bill Myhr said that his girls were bothered by a case of the tournament jitters, and that their shooting (10-from-31 at the line, 14-of-71 from the field) reflects this condition.
He also gave plenty of credit to Ephrata. "There pressure kept us off tempo, and bothered our shooting rhythm," he said. "We never got comfortable."
"We had our chances to come back. We have the type of team that can dominate when we're playing ball."
Dominate? Yes. At times the Okanogan County Tigers had three six-footers across the front line.
"I'd like to have a look at the boards." said King, convinced that his smaller team had held its own in rebounding. It did, Ephrata showing a 46-45 rebounding edge on the chart.
"Michelle Tommer," he said, "came off the bench and played her best in a long time," King added.
Becky Wiersma, another freshman, was one of the guards who played a big role in the win.

Ephrata (16-6) - Andrews 8, Monson 5, Longworth 7, Nelson 5, Lynch 6, Chamberlain 2, Wiersma 7, Klettke, Cornwell, Tommer 10, Satterlee 1.

Okanogan 34, Liberty Bell 33
Game 8. (Semifinal)
At Eastmont Junior High

This was anybody's game... right down to the final second when Liberty Bell's Staci Haugen nervously went to the line to shoot a free throw. The ball bounced off the rim and Okanogan's Beth Campbell cradled the ball protectively as the final buzzer sounded.
The game was a match-up of contrasting defenses, both tough, Liberty Bell's stubborn 1-2-2 zone and Okanogan's all-court pressure.
In the end, it may have been that pressure that won it for Okanogan. Campbell scored to put Okanogan ahead with 20 seconds to play, and Liberty Bell called timeout.
The Mountain Lions had 17 seconds to get the ball down-court and set up a final shot, but Okanogan applied the pressure from end-to-end and the Methow Valley girls never got that chance, although there was that foul called a split second before the buzzer.
The play that won it for Okanogan was set up by a reserve who just come into the game, Mel Spence. She got the rebound off a missed Okanogan free throw and flipped the ball across the key to Campbell, who produced Okanogan's only fourth-quarter points, and the Bulldogs first points in more than nine minutes.
"We played too slow in the fourth quarter," said Okanogan coach Dick Merriman, noting that the Bulldogs had a 32-24 lead entering the final period.
He acknowledged that "defense is our game. We're always after the ball."
He added that "Liberty Bell plays the zone defense and gets people to play their tempo. They're very patient and they're a good team."
Campbell led the scoring with 12 points as well as doing a great job on the boards and playing 110 percent on defense. Julie Christianson, who scored the tying basket with 2:41 to play and the go-ahead free throw at the 2:01 mark, led Liberty Bell with 11.
Coach Lance Hope looked at the free throw chart which showed his Lions with just 9-of-22 accuracy at the line. "That's been our problem all year," he said.
At the end, he said, "We had the girl at the line we wanted. She's our best free throw shooter."
Of the final-period comeback, he said, "I thought we played real good defense in the fourth quarter, and got back into the game. We didn't give them anything inside, except too many offensive rebounds."

Okanogan (18-3) - Campbell 12, Duke 6, Condon 5, Beller 2, Pfeiffer 6, Burchett 1, Walker 2.
Liberty Bell (18-3) - Julie Christianson 11, Karla Christianson 7, Haugen 7, Legg 5, Miller, Flynn, Forsythe 3, Moore.

Liberty Bell 55, Quincy 50 (OT)
Game 9. (Loser out)
At Eastmont Junior High

Karla Christianson scored on a 10-footer with just 13 seconds remaining, lifting Liberty Bell into a 48-all time and sending the game into overtime.
Quincy, after a time-out, had a chance at the tying basket, but all the Jackrabbits could muster was a wild shot that was partially checked.
The overtime belonged to the more experienced Liberty Bell club. After baskets by Stacey Legg, off a rebound, and Julie Christianson, hers with 43 seconds on the clock, the Lions were able to limit the Jacks to only two points in the overtime period.
Quincy's smooth-operating junior, Peggy Weinand, led all scorers with 19 points. Traci Schultz added 10 and senior guard Susie Dreher made a key contribution off the bench during Quincy's third-period takeover.

Liberty Bell (19-3) - Karla Christianson 16, Miller 5, Legg 11, Haugen 12, Julie Christianson 11, Moore, Forsythe, Sabin.

Tonasket 56, Lake Roosevelt 37
Game 10. (Loser out)
At Eastmont Junior High

The Tonasket win showed "what we can do when we are aggressive," said Tonasket coach Bill Myhr. "The other night we let Ephrata attack us."
Leading the inside game was the Tigers' talented sophomore six-footer, Kendra Curtis. She poured in 11 field goals on her way to a 28-point total and also snared 18 rebounds.
Myhr was pleased with the team rebounding, which showed Tonasket with a 41-25 edge. "Lake Roosevelt took only four off the offensive board all night." he noted.
Tonasket was never in any serious difficulty after cracking a 15-15 tie in the second quarter and moving out to a 28-16 halftime lead.
The Raiders' Shanee Haugen, the leading point producer in the district this season, was whistled for two fouls in the first two minutes and sat out the last 11 minutes of the first half after being called for foul number three.
She had her fourth foul in the first minute of the second half and never could operate effectively.
Freshman Nancy Kuiper led the Raiders with 13 points and Lisa Loe had 10.
Brenda Johnson, a 6-0 junior, teamed with Curtis on the inside and totaled 15 points.

Tonasket (14-9) - Nelson 1, Johnson 15, Dugas 6, Curtis 28, Veit, Devereaux 6, Pilkinton, Cooking, Baker, Robinson, Heather Maple, Laura Maple.

Liberty Bell 41, Tonasket 39
Game 11. (Loser out)
At Eastmont Junior High

Liberty Bell, one of the smallest girls basketball teams in the region, out-positioned Tonasket, one of the tallest to forge a thrilling victory at Eastmont Junior High Friday night.
The triumph moved the Mountain Lions just one victory away form obtaining the number two berth to the state basketball tournament.
"We are 20-3, and all three losses have come from Okanogan," said Liberty Bell coach Lance Hope. "We should be able to beat them this time. We match up with them pretty well."
The Lions maintained good position, both offensively and defensively, to slow down Tonasket's trio of six-footers.
"We are the smallest team in the league," said Hope. "All year long we've been going up against girls that are four, five, six inches taller. Bigger girls have a tendency to rely on natural ability and not concentrate on getting good position, so we stress position in all of our practices."
Liberty Bell took control of the contest in the third quarter when Staci Haugen scored three quick baskets to grab the lead and went up by six with two minutes left on a Julie Christianson putback.
Tonasket had several chances to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Liberty Bell was able to come up with key steals and clutch rebounds.
"Free throws have been our bugaboo all season long," said Hope after the Lions missed the front end of three one-and-one chances in the last 30 seconds that could have put the game away.
Christianson topped all scorers with 12 points from inside. Haugen popped in another 10.
"We pretty much did what we had to do when we needed to do it," said Hope. "We got a great effort inside, getting position on their big girls (Johnson, Curtis and Dugas). When they started falling in on us, we started to hit from the outside to draw them back out."

Liberty Bell (20-3) - Karla Christianson 3, Sabin, Flynn, Miller 4, Moore, Legg 5, Forsythe 7, Erickson, Haugen 10, Julie Christianson 12, Dubroulliet.

Ephrata 53, Okanogan 51
Game 12 (Championship, winner #1 to state)
At Eastmont Junior High

It was, as winning coach Don King put it, a shame that any team had to lose.
King's Ephrata Tigers were on the winning end of a 53-51 score at the finish of the classic confrontation with Okanogan. The two rivals hooked up in a heart-stopping battle for the North Central District "A" girls basketball championship before a near capacity crowd at the Eastmont Junior High gym Friday night.
With the victory, and the district championship, Ephrata's girls can pack their bags in preparation for a trip to Tacoma.
Ephrata and Okanogan had to do some waiting prior to the start of the championship game. It seems that the officials didn't get the word of the game shift (the championship game to precede the Liberty Bell-Tonasket contest in order to accommodate Tonasket fans, who also had a team to follow in the boys tourney).
"It's too bad there has to be a loser in a game like that," said Ephrata coach King in din of the Ephrata celebration. "Nobody said die." he said with reference to both teams.
And how did the Tigers accomplish this feat?
"Our goal was to stop Beth Campbell," said King. "We ran a 1-3-1 (zone defense) and I think we did a good job in the first half."
While Campbell, the Okanogan star and the only big girl in the Bulldogs' lineup, had trouble shaking her loose in the first half, she was able to operate with a little more freedom in the second half.
"It's hard to get loose when you have Angelina Andrews guarding you," said King.
"She sure played the "D," King said of his two seniors.
The other senior, Sara Monson, was the offensive standout. Her 24 points represents "her best offensive production of the year," King said. "She picked an opportune time to come through."
"That's our senior leadership (Monson and Andrews)."
Monson hit 12-of-16 free throws, including two with 12 seconds to play to lock up the win, Ephrata third district championship and sixth trip to state.
Those two free throws gave Ephrata a four-point cushion. Okanogan's Jill Pfeiffer scored from the top of the key with four seconds remaining to create the final margin.
Mary Beth Nelson, a 6-1 freshman, was the force that turned the momentum in Ephrata's favor. After Okanogan scrapped back from an eight-point deficit to tie the score at the half and go ahead by two early in the second half, Nelson became a big factor at both ends of the court in the third quarter.
And then when Okanogan took a three-point lead (for the second time) late in the game, Nelson made two big hoops, the second basket wresting the lead, at 50-49, with 1:22 to play. Campbell fouled out with 48 seconds remaining and Nelson added a free throw for a two-point Ephrata edge.
"We just got ourselves in foul trouble," said Okanogan coach Dick Merriman in the stillness of the Okanogan locker-room. "I thought we were still in the ball game at the end, but when we lost Beth we lost our rebounding."
Both coaches were complimentary of the other's team.
"I think Sara Monson deserves a lot of credit for that ball game," said Merriman.
"It was a super game," said King. "Dick Merriman does a super job with those girls."
Merriman looks for his girls to "spring back real quick" and be ready for the battle with Liberty Bell, with that coveted state berth at stake.
"They'll be worn down a little bit," he said. "No team gives more to a game," he said of his Okanogan players.

Ephrata (17-6) - Tommer 2, Lynch, Andrews 4, Monson 24, Longworth 10, Nelson 7, Wiersma 4, Klettke 2, Cornwell.
Okanogan (18-4) - Duke 8, Walker 4, Pfeiffer 8, Condon 8, Campbell 17, Burchett, Spence 4, Beller 2, LeMaster.

Okanogan 53, Liberty Bell 43
Game 13 (Winner #2 state, loser out)
At Eastmont High School

Okanogan coach Dick Merriman was elated that his girls basketball team qualified for the State Class A basketball tournament Saturday night at the Eastmont High gymnasium.
But he wasn't happy about who the Bulldogs beat to get there.
Okanogan landed a spot in the state tournament by turning back Liberty Bell in the North Central District "A" basketball tournament finale.
"I wish we would have beaten somebody else," said Merriman in sympathy for the Mountain Lions.
Ironically, the Lions had a perfect 20-0 record against everybody else they played. They were 0-4 against the Bulldogs.
"They kind of stepped up the pace on us and we fell into the trap," said Liberty Bell coach Lance Hope. "We've got to slow down the tempo to stay with any team we face. We can't blow out anybody."
Liberty Bell's patience paid off early, the Lions led 17-11 midway through the second quarter, but Okanogan got is running game going and turned that deficit into a 24-19 lead at halftime.
Liberty Bell came no closer than five points, it was 36-31 going into the final quarter, the rest of the way.
"When we play a good game our little guards always contribute," said Merriman.
And how they contributed!
When Okanogan took control of the contest in the second half, reserves Fawn Walker (5-4) and Terri Burchett (5-6) and starter Jill Pfeiffer (5-6) supplied most of the firepower.
It was a balanced effort by Okanogan all game long. Beth Campbell finished with 11 points. Walker and Pfeiffer each had 10 and Burchett added nine. Sheri Duke also made a solid contribution with seven points.
Julie Christianson played a courageous game for the Lions, scoring 10 of her team's 12 fourth-quarter points en route to a game-high 19 points.
Hope said his team's difficulty against Okanogan this season centered on the Bulldogs' "ability to create errors by their pressure defense. They're a darned good ball club. Dick (Merriman) teaches the team pressure concept all the way down to the junior high program."
"By the time the girls get up here (to the varsity level) they've got the system down. He's got to be congratulated for the fine effort his girls turned in."
As for his own club, Hope said. "It's going to be particularly hard to lose this group because we've been together so long."
"I've seldom seen any group that molded together like these girls. They're unselfish. They'd rather set somebody else up than take the shot themselves."

Liberty Bell (20-4) - Karla Christianson 5, Haugen 5, Miller 2, Legg 8, Julie Christianson 19, Moore.
Okanogan (19-4) - Duke 7, Pfeiffer 10, Condon 4, Beller 4, Campbell 11, Spence, Burchett 9, Walker 10.
