Cascade-Leavenworth 53, Omak 50
Game 1.
At Omak, WA

Playoffs are considered a new season. The second season.
Omak found out why on Tuesday night in a North Central District A boys' basketball playoff game against Cascade. Omak had beaten the Kodiaks twice during the regular season, but Cascade erased a seven-point third-quarter deficit and went on to post a 53-50 win in the first-round game.
The win sends Cascade (12-9) on to Friday's game with Lake Roosevelt, set for 6:30 p.m. at Omak High. Tonasket (13-8), a 74-49 winner over Chelan on Tuesday, advances to meet Ephrata in the 8 p.m. game Friday.
Chelan and Omak must now wait until Tuesday, Feb. 25, when they will play loser-out games against Friday's losers.
``We were just a little complacent coming off the win Saturday,'' Omak coach Dan Williams said, referring to Omak's 61-49 win over Cascade in the regular-season finale. ``Cascade came out ready to play.''
Cascade coach Pat Fromm said it had quite awhile since he'd seen his team so focused.
``I think our intensity level was higher than it's been for some time,'' he said. ``That's been something that's plagued us. I'm never sure which team is going to be there.''
Cascade's Stan Olson and B.T. Parton each sank two free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
Omak got a final shot off, but Ken Stanley's attempt from inside the 3-point stripe missed with less than five seconds to play.
Cascade got a big lift in the fourth quarter from front-line player Cody Moreshead, who scored eight of his 10 points down the stretch.
Moreshead sank a shot off a dribble drive with about two minutes left that gave the Kodiaks a four-point lead.
``That was a big hoop,'' Fromm said.
``We guarded everybody else,'' Williams said. ``(Moreshead) made the most out of it.''
Cascade was led in scoring by B.T. Parton (17 points) and Paul Obergh (16 points).
Parton did most of the damage in the second half for the Kodiaks, netting 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in Cascade's third-quarter surge. Parton dealt out six assists.
Obergh dominated the first half, scoring 14 of Cascade's 16 points through the first 16 minutes.
Jason Romine of Omak paced all scorers with 20 points.
Stanley, who finished with eight points, sank a 3-pointer to pull Omak to within a point of Cascade with just under a minute to play.
Omak's Javier Navarro also hit a basket in the final minute to keep Omak close.
Cascade (12-9) - Parton 17, Obergh 16, McMahon 6, Olson 4, Moreshead 10, Hazen, Warman.

The Tigers shot a blistering 51 percent from the field, canning 30 of 59 shots.
Chelan made 20 of 48 (42 percent) floor attempts.
``It was one of the few games where we've shown offensive discipline,'' said Tonasket coach Darryl Moulton.
Moulton praised the all-around effort of reserve guard Ben White, who played a key role directing the offense in the second half.
``He's a real silent guy, but he does all the little things,'' said Moulton.

Whitmore's nine rebounds led the Tigers to a 33-25 edge on the boards. Chelan had just five offensive rebounds.

Cascade-Leavenworth 52, Omak 50
Game 7. (Loser out)
At Eastmont High School

The Kodiaks didn't put away pesky Omak when they had the chance and they nearly paid the price.
Cascade, up by 11 points entering the fourth quarter, lost all but one point of the margin in the closing seconds. Then they nearly lost the game when Pete Semoe's three-quarters court shot at the buzzer bounced off the back of the rim.
``I wasn't watching,'' said Cascade coach Pat Fromm. ``I figured it that sucker goes in, it was meant to be.''
After battling through a tight first half, Cascade used defense to build its advantage in the third quarter. The Kodiaks held Omak to one field goal in the first period, none coming in the final 5:38. Getting points from five players, Cascade outscored the Pioneers 13-2 to close out the quarter, capped by Stan Olson's tip-in at the buzzer.
Omak didn't die. The Pioneers, fueled by 3-pointers from Ken Stanley and Semoe, quickly pulled within two points.
Cascade turned to Paul Obergh. The senior swished a 19-footer on the baseline and followed with a trey. The Kodiaks built the lead up to 50-44 on Brock McMahon's driving lay-in with 1:34 to play.
``Paul's a money player,'' Fromm said of Obergh. ``He's a senior and he's been there.''
A pair of Stanley treys, sandwiched around a McMahon free throw, made it 51-50 with seven seconds left. McMahon was fouled on the inbounds pass and sank one free throw with 2 seconds to play. He missed the second and Omak had time enough for Semoe to throw his last-second prayer.
``We dug ourselves too deep of a hole,'' said Omak coach Dan Williams. In the third quarter, ``we just lost our patience.''
Obergh finished with a game-high 23 points on 10-for-18 shooting. McMahon scored nine points and Cody Moreshead grabbed seven rebounds.
Jason Romine, the Kodiaks' defensive target, scored 16 points to lead Omak, which finished 14-9. Stanley scored 12 and Javier Navarro had 11.
Omak (14-10) - Semoe 3, Stanley 12, Navarro 11, Romine 16, Hansen 2, Hendrick 6, Rader, Miller, Cox.

Lake Roosevelt 78, Ephrata 75
Game 8. (Championship, winner to state)
At Eastmont High School

Confidence can be a powerful weapon.
Just look at what it's done for the Lake Roosevelt Raiders.
With a season full of close wins under their belts, the Raiders knew just what to do in the closing minutes of their 78-75 victory over Ephrata for the North Central District A boys' basketball championship Friday.
It could be summed up in one word... work.
``Champions work harder than the other guy,'' Lake Roosevelt coach Tom Johnson said. ``I think they believed they'd win the ballgame. We've had close games all year and I think that's been to our benefit.''
It certainly showed. The Raiders, down four with 4:49 to play, came on strong in the final minutes behind Shawn Garvin and Michael Hocking to win their third district title in four years. All three came on the Eastmont High floor.
``This is great,'' said Garvin. ``League champs, district champs, it means a lot of us.''
The victory sends Lake Roosevelt to the State A tournament, beginning Wednesday in Tacoma, for the fourth year in a row. Ephrata and Cascade, which downed Omak 52-50 in Friday's other game, will play 8 p.m. Saturday at Eastmont for the second state berth.
The Raiders had just enough to edge Ephrata for the third time this season. This time, Garvin's inside dominance proved to be the difference.
After battling through 31/2 quarters of exciting ball which included six ties and four lead changes, Ephrata led 68-64 with 4:49 to play. Then Garvin hit a free throw, made a steal at mid-court, leading to a Tony Posey lay-in, and netted two foul shots to put the Raiders ahead 69-68 with 2:31 to play. After Travis King scored to put Ephrata ahead, Garvin answered with a fast-break lay-in.
The Raiders upped their lead to 74-70 with 1:05 left when Hocking's lay-in and free throw finished off a 3-on-1 fast break. Glenn Chamberlain's driving layin pulled the Tigers within two, then Jason Kiser made one foul shot for the Raiders.
Ephrata had a chance to tie when King, who has hit more than 100 3-pointers this season, broke free, but his trey glanced off the rim with 22 seconds left.
The Tigers weren't done. After Posey canned one foul shot, Eric Davis bombed in a trey to make it 76-75 with 7 seconds left. The Tigers immediately fouled Clint Comstock, who calmly swished two foul shots with 4 seconds left. King's three-quarter court shot to tie at the buzzer wasn't close.
``There's not a lot of difference between these two teams,'' said Ephrata coach Marty O'Brien. ``They just beat us every time.''
Johnson attributed it all to the Raiders' effort.
``It's a four-letter word we use around the locker-room, work,'' he said. ``We just tell them hard work is going to pay off.''
Lake Roosevelt applied that work ethic to defense and rebounding. The Raiders concentrated a lot of that defense on King, the Tigers' high-scoring guard. While King scored 24 points, he tossed up 32 shots and made only eight (he was 3-for-18 on 3-pointers).
While the Raiders pulled down only two more rebounds than Ephrata, it cost the Tigers on defense. The Tigers' two biggest starters, Benji Williams and Denver Morford, each fouled out late in the game. That meant smaller players had to defend Garvin.
It didn't work. Garvin wound up with game-high totals of 24 points and 15 rebounds, plus four blocked shots. He shot 8-for-18 from the field and 8-10 at the foul line.
``I owe him an awful lot,'' Johnson said. ``I have a lot of respect for him.''
Hocking was one of three other Raiders to score in double figures, finishing with 15 points. He also took a key charge on King with the Raiders up by one point with 1:32 to play. Kiser and Comstock, who snared eight rebounds, each netted 11 points.
Glenn Chamberlain sparked Ephrata with 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting and six rebounds. Craig Cherf contributed solid defense and a team-high nine rebounds for the Tigers.
Ephrata (16-6) - King 24, Greg Chamberlain 4, Glenn Chamberlain 22, Williams 6, Morford 6, Carroll 2, Cherf 4, Quinn 4, Barbre, DeHoog, Davis 3.
Lake Roosevelt (18-4) - Kiser 11, Hocking 15, Comstock 11, Posey 7, Garvin 24, Cook 7, Nicholson 3, Leith, Pearson.

Ephrata 77, Cascade-Leavenworth 70
Game 9. (winner to state, loser out).
At Eastmont High School

Ephrata had 'em outnumbered.
Sheer force of depth enabled the Tigers to topple Cascade 77-70 in the North Central District A runner-up game Saturday at Eastmont High.
Along with the win came a berth in the State A tournament beginning Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome. Cascade's season ended at 14-11.
``We had a deeper bench and more kids,'' said Ephrata coach Marty O'Brien, who used all 12 players and received some strong performances from substitutes.
``That's been a concern all year long,'' said Cascade coach Pat Fromm, who used only six players until the final minute. ``I felt if we could keep the game under 60 (points), we'd have a shot.''
Instead, Ephrata was able to get the game at its fast pace long enough in the second quarter to build a 12-point lead. Cascade fought back to trail by five points with 4:11 to play, but Travis King's driving lay-in and two free throws during an 8-2 run put the Tigers in command at 71-60 with 2:04 left.
Cascade was forced to foul and Ephrata responded by sinking 10 of 13 foul shots in the fourth quarter. Two of the misses came in the final 38 seconds when the game had been decided.
``We shot our free throws and took good shots,'' O'Brien said. ``We let the game come to us a bit tonight.''
The bench played a big role. Both teams had players in foul trouble early in the game. While Ephrata received help off the bench, Cascade didn't and had to play a bit soft. That's what happened in the second quarter when Ephrata substitute Eric Davis hit two 3-pointers in one minute and launched 14 points in the second quarter.
Davis had played in the dying seconds of Ephrata's district championship loss to Lake Roosevelt and canned a 3-pointer. Afterward, O'Brien promised to give Davis a chance earlier on Saturday.
``I think we had a coming out party for Eric Davis,'' O'Brien said of the sophomore, who finished with 15 points on 4-for-7 shooting. His previous varsity high was seven points.
The scoring of Davis helped put Ephrata in control. The Tigers, who trailed only once at 3-2, had a 12-point lead trimmed to three at the end of the first quarter. Then Davis emerged, hitting five points during an 11-4 run which the Tigers turned into a 42-30 halftime lead.
Cascade had been forced to keep its scoring leader, Paul Obergh, in the game with three fouls. Obergh, who topped the 1,000-point mark in career scoring, had to play soft on Davis.
Ephrata's other bench star was Bryan Barbre, who drew the tough defensive job on Obergh for much of the game. Obergh shot 4-for-13 for the game.
Obergh ``personally can beat you and we were afraid he would,'' said O'Brien in praising Barbre's defensive effort.
Ephrata also had emotions to overcome. Usually teams which lose the district championship have trouble winning the next night in the second-place game.
``I was concerned if we had the right attitude,'' O'Brien said. ``I shouldn't have been, because we've had good attitude all the time.''
The Tigers' balanced attack was paced by King's 24 points, 16 coming in the first half. Glenn Chamberlain had a solid game, with 17 points (on 6-for-10 shooting) and a team-high eight rebounds. Benji Williams hit 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting.
Four Kodiaks scored in double figures, topped by Brock McMahon's 19 points. The sophomore hit back-to-back treys during Cascade's fourth quarter rally.
Obergh finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while B.T. Parton and Cody Moreshead each netted 11 points.
Ephrata (17-6) - King 24, Greg Chamberlain 5, Glenn Chamberlain 17, Williams 12, Morford, DeHoog, Carroll 2, Quinn, Davis 15, Barbre 2, Bair.
Cascade (14-11) - Parton 11, Obergh 13, McMahon 19, Olson 8, Moreshead 11, Hazen 5, Hickman, Warman, Furman, Renberg 3.
