At Leavenworth, WA

Ryan Hansen pumped in 24 points, B.T. Parton scored 16 and Seth Hazen had 12 to power Cascade to the North Central District A victory.
Cascade committed just four turnovers to improve to 16-5 overall.
"If you count poor shot selection as a turnover, we had a bunch of them," Cascade coach Pat Fromm said. "We got after them better in the second half (outscoring Okanogan 39-29)."
Parton scored 12 points in the second half and Hansen tossed in 11.
For Okanogan (7-14), Mikel Ward scored 14 points and Rafe Kincaid added 13 points.

Tonasket 79, Liberty Bell 56
Game 2.
At Twisp, WA

When things don't work the first time, try something new.
That simple formula worked well for the Tonasket boys' basketball team Thursday night, as the Tigers beat Liberty Bell 79-56 at Twisp in the first round of the North Central District A tournament.
Tonasket (14-7 overall) canned 19 of 22 floor shots in the second half and shot 73 percent for the game in a victory which avenged a pair of Caribou Trail League losses to Liberty Bell.
"We've been using the Michigan football motto, `Everybody who steps up will be a champion,' " Tonasket coach Darryl Moulton said. "That's by far our best game shooting the ball.
"We felt we had to improve our penetration to the basket against them."
Tonasket's Jeff Pile took care of that, driving inside for a team-high 20 points. Moulton also praised Pile's defensive intensity in guarding Brian Court, who still managed to score a game-high 28 points for Liberty Bell (13-8).
"Court really made some unbelievable shots. He can keep them in the game all by himself," Moulton said.
"We wanted to take (Court's) quickness out of the game. In the past two games, we had a tough time getting into our offense because of their quickness."
Liberty Bell went without a basket for six minutes as Tonasket went on a 20-7 tear in the third quarter.
Liberty Bell coach Mike Ankrom said Tonasket was able to take it inside more effectively after his 6-foot-8 post Chris Garr fouled out in the third quarter.
"They were hitting before that, but Hauff really came to life after that (with 14 second-half points)," Ankrom said. "The post play of Hauff and Hendrick was big for them."
Tonasket center Matt Hauff scored 14 points, Barry Pilkinton added 13 and Ross Hendrick had 10.
Tonasket (14-7) - Pile 20, Gomez 1, Pilkinton 13, Lorz 5, Hauff 14, Jorgenson 4, Barroca, McFarland 7, Brightbill, Bell, Hendrick 10.
Liberty Bell (13-8) - Brian Court 28, Mitchell 7, Westlund 8, Garr 2, Buzzard, Bryce Court 3, Acord, Schade, Klinkert, Larson, Lathrop 6, Jones 2.

Cascade-Leavenworth 86, Chelan 75
Game 3.
At Chelan, WA

Opposing teams haven't found much success playing an up-tempo style against the Chelan boys' basketball team this season.
But Saturday, Cascade beat Chelan at its own game, 86-75 in North Central District A tournament action at Chelan.
Cascade advances to face Cashmere, which beat Tonasket 53-39 at Cashmere, in the championship final at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wenatchee High. The winner of that game gains the top berth to the State A tourney.
In loser-out games scheduled for Tuesday, Tonasket will host Okanogan and Liberty Bell will play at Chelan.
"It was a little bit faster than the last couple times we played them," said Chelan coach Joe Harris, whose Goats beat Cascade twice during the regular season. "They beat us down the floor from the very beginning. We had a tough time adjusting to that. Our guys are pretty quick. We just didn't react real well."
Ryan Hansen scored 13 of his 26 points in the first quarter, as Cascade (17-5 overall) jumped to a 26-23 first-quarter lead.
Chelan (14-7) could get no closer than seven points in the fourth quarter.
Harris said Hansen's effective penetration on drives down the lane complemented Todd McDevitt's inside play. McDevitt shot 8 for 11 from the field to finish with 18 points and Seth Hazen added 18 points for the Kodiaks.
For Chelan, Nathan Boyd scored 19 points, reserve Jeff Carlson totaled 16 points and nine rebounds, Eric Boyd scored 11 points and Luke Hammons had 10.

Cashmere 53, Tonasket 39
Game 4.
At Cashmere, WA

The eighth-ranked Bulldogs (18-3) rode the strong inside play of Adam Kerns, who had 20 points and 12 rebounds, in the district semifinal game.
"Tonasket did a good job trying to keep the tempo down," Cashmere coach Miles Caples said. "They had difficulty handling Kerns. He had five field goals and was 10 for 12 at the line.
"We started turning up the pressure and got a couple steals and got out on them with a little bit of a run (16-9) in the first quarter."
Caples praised Nathan James, who blocked four shots, for his defensive play against Tonasket's Barry Pilkinton. Geoff Smith netted 12 points for the Bulldogs, who outscored Tonasket 30-18 after the intermission to pull away.
Pilkinton scored 18 points to pace Tonasket (14-8).

Game 5. (Loser out)
At Tonasket, WA

Jeff Pile scored on a baseline jump shot with 56 seconds remaining to give the Tigers the lead and Barry Pilkinton made 4 of 5 free-throw attempts in the final 13 seconds to secure the victory in the loser-out game.
Pile totaled 19 points to lead four Tigers in double-figure scoring. Pilkinton added 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds, Matt Hauff had 12 points, six rebounds and five assists and Gavin McFarland scored 10 points, including three 3-point goals.
Okanogan (7-15) led by five points with less than four minutes remaining before Tonasket (15-8) put on a late charge.
"I felt really relieved to walk out of there with a victory and go on to tomorrow," Tonasket coach Darryl Moulton said, referring to tonight's contest against Chelan in another loser-out game.
Moulton praised the play of freshman Ross Hendrick, who scored nine points, making all four of his field-goal attempts, and grabbed three rebounds.
Darin Radke led Okanogan with 15 points and Rafe Kincaid added 14. The Bulldogs played the final three quarters without leading scorer Mikel Ward, a 6-foot-8 post player who suffered an ankle injury late in the first period.

The Boyd brothers stole the show, as Nathan Boyd scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Eric Boyd added 20 points and eight assists to lead the Goats in the loser-out game.
Liberty Bell (13-9) led 23-15 after the first quarter, making 10 of 17 field-goal attempts, but Nathan Boyd scored 14 points in the second period to help the Goats to a 38-37 halftime lead.
"I don't think we were worried, just a little overanxious," Chelan coach Joe Harris said of play in the first quarter. "We made some silly passes and had trouble executing.
"The first one (victory) is the hardest one. Our kids battled back and they didn't quit."
Harris also praised the play of reserves Jeff Carlson and Terry Walters. Carlson, a freshman, scored 18 points.
Chelan (15-7) led by as many as 15 points in the second half and the Mountain Lions never threatened.

Chelan 84, Tonasket 53
Game 7.(Loser out)
At Wenatchee High School

Chelan's Boyd brothers, Nathan and Eric, took turns running over, around and through the Tigers, as they combined for 53 points.
Senior Nathan Boyd did the honors early, scoring 15 points in the first quarter and 22 by halftime in netting 29 points.
"Nathan got it going for us early," Chelan coach Joe Harris said. "He never came out of the game until the end. Nathan just dug down."
"The last two games, I've been really focused," Nathan Boyd said. "I need to start this team. It seems like now everything is coming around."
While Chelan led from late in the first quarter to the finish, it was the second half when the Goats took charge. Chelan led by five points midway through the third quarter, then steadily pulled away. Sophomore Eric Boyd provided the spark, as he scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half.
"Eric, when he gets it going, he can get the whole team on a roll, which is what happened in the second half."
Tonasket coach Darryl Moulton was impressed with the Goats.
"Chelan is so explosive," he said. "All I could think was their team quickness showed tonight. They fly down the court."
The Goats had their best success when the Boyds were joined by senior forward Ryan Hammons and two freshmen, Brook Nickell and Jeff Carlson. That group turned a five-point edge into a commanding 26-point lead in a nine-minute span. Hammons finished with a game-high 14 rebounds and Nickell scored 11 points.
Gavin MacFarland and Barry Pilkinton each scored 15 points for Tonasket. MacFarland hit five treys in 11 attempts, and Pilkinton netted three 3-pointers. Tonasket finished the season 15-9.

Cashmere 68, Cascade-Leavenworth 57
Game 8. (Championship)
At Wenatchee High School

With time running out in the first quarter, Geoff Smith threw up a twisting 3-pointer under double-team pressure and crashed to the floor.
When the improbable shot went in Wednesday night, all those old doubts had disappeared for the Cashmere boys' basketball team.
The Bulldogs went on to control the final three quarters in defeating Cascade 68-57 for the championship of the North Central District A tournament.
"That's called throw it up and start praying," Smith said of the trey, one of three he made in scoring 25 points. "After that, I thought for a while it was our night."
"That did it, that got us going," said Cashmere's Adam Kerns, who also scored 25 points.
The victory qualifies Cashmere (20-3) for the Class A state tournament, which begins Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome. It's Cashmere's first district title and state appearance since 1988.
Cascade (17-6) will play Chelan (16-7) for the district's second state berth at 3 p.m. Saturday. Earlier on Wednesday at Wenatchee High, the Goats eliminated Tonasket, 84-53.
The Bulldogs had plenty of motivation for the district championship game. Last year's team fell one win short of making the state tournament. And Cascade had beaten Cashmere by 18 points on Jan. 18, the Bulldogs' biggest defeat of the season.
"We were all pretty scared," Kerns said. "We watched the film (of the Cascade game) a lot."
"Last year, we didn't know what it was like to play in games like this," Smith said. "This year, we knew it was more than x's and o's."
"This is what they were pointing toward," Cashmere coach Miles Caples said of the state berth. "Now whatever (else) we get is great."
Smith's trey seemed just the confidence booster Cashmere needed. Soon after that, the Bulldogs took the lead for good. Cashmere led by 13 points in the first half and no fewer than five in the final minutes.
"Cashmere looked like a championship team tonight," Cascade coach Pat Fromm said. "We certainly didn't."
The difference this time around was intensity, plus the offensive exploits of Kerns and Smith. Kerns scored 19 points in the first half, while Smith had 14 points in the second half. Both shot well (Kerns was 11 for 15, Smith 10 for 13) and each helped out in other areas, Kerns with 10 rebounds and Smith with flawless ball-handling.
"When Kerns wasn't hurting us, Smith was doing it," Fromm said. "The thing is, Cashmere's other kids played their roles, too."
Kerns was at his best in the second quarter, when Cashmere went on an 18-2 run to take command. The powerful 6-foot-2 junior had 11 of his points during that stretch of 4:08.
"The first half, Adam was on a roll," Smith said. "The first half was his."
When Cascade changed defenses in the second half to contain Kerns, Smith went to work. The senior guard scored 12 of the team's first 18 points of the second half.
The Bulldogs' defense kept Cascade from establishing any offensive flow. The Kodiaks shot only 39 percent.
"We never were in sync, which is a credit to their defense," said Fromm, whose team's balanced attack was led by Ryan Hansen and B.T. Parton with 13 points each.
"We've played good defense the last couple of weeks," Caples said.
Cascade never had a chance to tie late in the game, but the Kodiaks missed a series of 3-pointers while trailing by five points. Cashmere stayed ahead by sinking 10 of 12 foul shots in the fourth quarter and grabbing rebounds on both the misses.
Cascade (17-6) - Hansen 13, Parton 13, McMahon 7, McDevitt 4, Hazen 11, Force 9, Pflugrath, Goehner, McIver, Ballew, Spencer.

Cascade-Leavenworth 73, Chelan 71
Game 9 (Winner to state, loser out).
At Wenatchee, WA

Like any sensible person, Jeremy Force ran away from an impending assault.
But the mob soon caught up to him and the Cascade boys' basketball player was buried in a sea of red shirts.
Force came out of the pileup with a bloody nose - and a big grin on his face - after sinking a 27-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Cascade a thrilling 73-71 win over Chelan on Saturday.
It wasn't any old win, either, for the victory in the North Central District A second-place game sends Cascade to the Class A state tournament beginning Wednesday in the Tacoma Dome. Chelan was eliminated.
"It's the kind of shot you always dream of getting to take," said Force, a junior reserve guard. "I had a funny feeling it would go in."
Immediately after sinking the winning shot, Force ran to the far end of the Wenatchee High gym, both hands clutched to his head. Cascade teammates caught up to him near the emergency exit on the north side of the gym.
"I thought I was going to get mauled, so I was getting out of the way," Force said.
Force wasn't supposed to take the winning shot. The Kodiaks had time to design a play after calling a timeout with three seconds left. The pass came into Force near mid-court and he dribbled around one Chelan player before casting off the winner, which hit nothing but net.
"We had a play set and it wasn't there," Cascade coach Pat Fromm said. "There were three seconds, not a lot of time. ... We've lost games like that. We've never won any like that."
It was a cruel way for Chelan's season to end. The Goats had scrapped back from a six-point deficit in the final three minutes to take the lead.
"We were down, battled back and got ahead, which showed a little character on our part," Chelan coach Joe Harris said. "I think it was just two pretty good teams battling each other."
The teams put on quite a show, with 13 ties and 28 lead changes. The biggest lead through the first three quarters was five points.
"That was a heck of a game," Fromm said. "Unfortunately, somebody had to lose."
Both teams had balanced attacks, with Cascade having four players score in double figures and Chelan five. Todd McDevitt led Cascade with 19 points and 16 rebounds, including 12 points and 12 boards in the second half. Brock McMahon also netted 19 points, Ryan Hansen scored 12 and Seth Hazen had 10 points.
Chelan was paced by Luke Hammons, with 18 points, Ryan Hammons with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Eric Boyd with 12 points, Jeff Carlson with 11 points and 11 boards, and Nathan Boyd with 11 points.
Cascade jumped out quickly to start the fourth quarter as McMahon, who topped the 1,000 point mark for his career, hit two straight baskets. The Kodiaks stretched the lead to six and had a 67-61 lead when B.T. Parton drove for a lay-up with 2:40 left. But Cascade soon lost McDevitt to his fifth foul after earlier losing Hansen to fouls.
Chelan clawed back behind a scrappy defense. Luke Hammons canned two foul shots and Eric Boyd (12 points) drove for two points. After Force made one foul shot, Eric Boyd drove for a basket, cutting the Cascade lead to one. The Goats forced another turnover and Luke Hammons was fouled, sinking two free throws with 1:20 left to put Chelan up 69-68.
Cascade spread the floor and McMahon powered inside for a lay-up, putting Cascade up 70-69 with 1:14 to go.
"Brock just wasn't going to be denied," Fromm said. "He's such a hard worker. He's a coach's dream."
After each team missed free throws and the Kodiaks had a turnover, Chelan pushed the ball ahead to Carlson, who drove for a left-handed lay-up with 48 seconds to go.
Cascade set up a play for Parton, whose turnaround 12-foot banker missed. Ryan Hammons rebounded for Chelan but traveled as he fell to the floor. Three seconds were left as Cascade set up the final play.
"With only three seconds left, I knew I had time to dribble a couple of times," Force said, "then I pulled up for the jumper."
It was worth the bloody nose.
Cascade (18-6) - Hansen 12, Parton 7, McMahon 19, McDevitt 19, Hazen 10, Force 6, McIver.
