KETTLE
FALLS - Ted Pancoast submitted his resignation on Monday after an incident in
the late moments of Saturday night's 64-54 overtime loss at Liberty Bell.
Pancoast said the incident involved a parent of one his players. According
to Pancoast, the parent, who was sitting in the stands at the time, yelled a
profanity at Pancoast late in the game.
"There are a lot of things that I'd just as soon not get into,"
Pancoast said on Monday after he told his players, assistant coaches and
district administrators of his decision to resign 14 games into his first season
as head coach. "I just thought on the way home (from Liberty Bell) that it
wasn't worth it. There are other problems too," added Pancoast, who
declined to elaborate. "But I couldn't sleep the last couple of days
after that happened (at Liberty Bell). It just isn't worth the physical and
emotional toll. For my physical health, this is the best thing for me to
do."
Pancoast wasn't very happy about the scheduling of a tough Northeast A League
road trip to Freeman on Friday night and a Saturday road trip into the mountains
of the Methow Valley.
The biggest winter storm of the season had dropped anywhere from six to a foot
of snow around the region Friday and Saturday. Numerous high school games
and wrestling matches were either cancelled or rescheduled because of the
weather. But KF's long road trip to Winthrop went on as scheduled.
"We shouldn't have been down there," Pancoast said of that Saturday
road trip. "I didn't get home until 4 a.m. Sunday."
By all accounts, Pancoast and his staff had done a solid job in fashioning an
8-6 record through early January. The highlight to date was a rare State
1A top-ten ranking after the Lady Bulldogs upset then top-ranked Brewster.
The Bulldog girls' program has enjoyed little success in its history. Losses
have far outnumbered wins. That trend appeared to be changing this season.
