District History News &
Notes:
- The first two district tournaments (1975 and 1976) were held in
mid-December at Waterville High School. The regular season was
played in the fall months of October, November and December. The
Caribou Trail League was divided into North and South divisions.
The North consisted of Oroville, Tonasket, Omak, Okanogan and Lake
Roosevelt, while Cashmere, Chelan, Leavenworth, Ephrata and
Quincy made
up the South division.
- The two divisions met at the end of
the season in a league tournament to decide seedings into the North
Central District A-B basketball tournament. The number one team
from the North would play the number one team from the South to decide
the overall league champion and number one seed to districts.
The number two team from the North would play the number two team from
the South with the loser getting the fourth seed into the tournament.
The winner of this game would face the loser of the two number one's
for second and third seeds.
- The top four "A" teams would
then face off with the top four from the North Central "B"
League in the district tournament. The first year all four
"B" schools were eliminated in the first round. This
made coaches and fans in the "B" league upset and
irate. They were crying foul and for immediate changes. So to
make them happy, the two leagues decided on making a complete double
elimination tourney.
- The State "A-B" Girls'
Basketball Tournament during these two years was not held until
February of the following year. So the two teams that had clinched
state tickets had to sit out nearly two months before playing
again. The tournament was held at Central Washington University
on February 18-21, in 1976 and February 16-19, in 1977. Imagine
having this format today.
