Colfax stops Brewster, Freeman shocks Liberty Bell

MOSES LAKE - The shots just didn't fall for the Caribou Trail League girls' basketball teams at the 1A regional tournament on Saturday.
Liberty Bell couldn't hit the close-in shots as Freeman won 45-40. The misses ended the Lions' season a game short of returning to the State 1A tournament for the third straight season.
Brewster's long-distance accuracy was off in the regional championship game, as Colfax prevailed 48-42.

Championship Game

Colfax 48, Brewster 42

All season long the Bears drained 3-pointers to go on game-winning spurts. Not this time.
Brewster never made more than two treys in a quarter while Colfax lived on inside baskets.
"We didn't practice well all this week, so I was afraid of this," Brewster coach Bryan Boesel said. "We didn't come out with the kind of intensity we needed. Maybe the girls will use this as a wake-up call for state."
Even hitting just 6 of 27 treys, Brewster stayed close. Freshman Jeni Boesel hit a 3-pointer near the end of the first half to put Brewster on top 25-24.
The Bears went scoreless on five straight possessions at the start of the second half as Colfax took charge.
Boesel finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Colfax got 18 points from Becky Van Tine. Emily Hall added 12 and Lizzy Mellor scored 11.

Winner #3 to state, loser out

Freeman 45, Liberty Bell 40

Twice in the final minute the Lions took close-in shots to gain the lead but the ball would not drop.
The Lions led at the outset as Jessica Werremeyer and Maja Nickell converted lay-ins. Eight misses followed.
"Getting out to that quick start didn't help us," Liberty Bell coach Mike Bourn said. "We started missing shots after that, especially free throws."
Junior post Lindsey Floch did most of the damage, scoring at least four points in each quarter. The 5-10 Floch finished with 18 points and got the 6-3 Werremeyer in foul trouble.
Werremeyer finished with 15 points, 11 in the second half. Four were part of an 8-2 run to put the Lions ahead midway through the third quarter.
