Thacker's 12-year History

Thacker's firing a sham and a shame

888
The Freeman School Board's decision to fire Mike Thacker as it's head boys basketball coach was an act of cowardice. Not only did they fail to inform him that they were going to conduct this vote, but they also could not tell him in person of the board's decision on the eve of school opening.

Here is what happened 8.28.07

During the school board meeting, superintendent Sergio Hernandez requested the approval of head coaches for fall and winter sports. Board member Diane Woodman moved to pull the boys basketball coach position for discussion. Chad Goldsmith moved to approve the remaining names. Kathleen Lundy seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

Woodman then moved that Mike Thacker not be hired for boys basketball.  Lundy seconded the motion.  After some discussion,  the vote was four "yes" and one "opposed".  All four yes votes came from the Four Old Hens, Woodman, Lundy, Sue Cronk and Chris Barnes. The one opposing vote came from Goldsmith.

It is important to note the guests present at this meeting were: Mark and Kathy Dresback, Ellen Hawley, Carli Lewis, Bob Lundy, Randy Primmer, Dave Smith, Jay Cronk,  and Leroy Allen.
Mark and Kathy Dresback were also present at the June 26 and July 25 school board meetings. Kathy Dresback attended the May 30 meeting.

The Dresback Connection

The Dresbacks have been leading the charge in making all this happen.  They had two sons, now graduated, play basketball for Thacker.  Both were very successful athletes while playing basketball at Freeman.  Apparently, somewhere along the line, Mark and Kathy Dresback were unhappy with coach Mike Thacker.  This came evident when Mark Dresback addressed the February 27 school board meeting.  After reading the board minutes via the school website, I sent the following e-mail to Mr. Dresback. (Note: these e-mails have cut and pasted in their original version. No alterations have been made in any way.)

Sean Campbell's e-mail to Mark Dresback sent Wednesday, April 4, 2007

Mr. Dresback:

"I read in the (February 27, 2007) Freeman School Board minutes that you very concerned about "the atmosphere the district is subjecting 14-18 year old boys, specifically the boys basketball team. My questions are:
~Please describe "the atmosphere" you are referring to,
~and is it your intention to see Mike Thacker removed as head coach?"

Thanks,
Sean Campbell

Mark Dresback's e-mail to Sean Campbell received Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Sean:

"Thank you for your interest and support of the Freeman Basketball program - I am very impressed with how faithful your have been to the Mike Thacker. Our family has, over the years - when it was up - followed your web page and we almost feel like we know you even though we have never really visited. Unfortunately for both of us I know you or at least know about you as reflected in your writings and opinions BUT you have no idea who I am what my values are and what I stand for. If you are truly interested in the health and welfare of 14 to 18 year old boys as they participate in athletics I welcome a phone conversation or in person discussion. If you are simply looking for a "cause" or something to "blog" about you have sent your email to the wrong address and please delete my e-mail address and phone number from your contact list. Just a couple of questions:
~Why do you read the minutes of the Freeman Board meetings?
~Do you read all of the minutes or did somebody direct you to those minutes?
~Why do you care and are now taking the time to find my e-mail address and ask some very direct questions prior to taking any time or effort to get to know me???"

What about the other kids?

It is apparent that the opinions, voices and wishes of the other student/athletes that play or not for Mike Thacker were never taken into consideration by the board.  When news of the Thacker's termination was announced to the kids, they were devastated.  This little fact was never taken into consideration, either.  How did the school board think the kids would react?  This includes all the kids that attend Freeman High School and not just his basketball players. They all know that Mike Thacker cares for them no matter who they may be, and in return he has their undying loyalty.  A teacher/coach does not last in the profession for as long as Thacker has, as he has shown time and time again that he deeply cares for all students at Freeman High School.  With this kind of support, it will be difficult for board members and irate parents not to take some serious heat for this unpopular decision.  It makes you wonder if sports are really for the kids or are they for a few entitled kids and their parents.

Where is the support from the administration

It used to be that teachers and coaches could rely on their superiors for support when it came to situations like this.  Principals, athletic directors and superintendents knew the people they had hired were good, decent, honest and fair.  They, also, knew that there were always a few parents that would "scream bloody murder" no matter who the coach happened to be.  It is not like that at many places anymore.  Some administrators, not all, are so afraid of the slightest bit of controversy, that they simply give in to the noise-makers.  That is the reality.

In this case, superintendent Sergio Hernandez and athletic director Brian Parisotto have shown little to no support for their basketball coach.  That would lead me to believe that they, too, are in favor of Thacker's dismissal.  They have said very little to show their feelings either way.  It is hard to trust people with no backbone because you never know which direction they will go. You can never expect them to show support when things get tough.  They usually run and hide behind the school board or highly influential people from the community.  Hernandez and Parisotto get paid a lot of money to do what?  So far, they have only shown that they are highly paid "yes-men". Both receive failing grades in leadership!

Question???

Is this decision to fire Mike Thacker as head basketball coach in the best interest of all student/athletes at Freeman High School or just a select few?
