The Okanogan football
team put on a passing show Friday night not seen by Bulldog fans in at
least eight years.
But an early 17-0 deficit always kept the game just a bit too far out of
reach as another group of Bulldogs, this one from Colfax, won 38-27 in the
non-league battle.
Two costly fumbles by Okanogan inside its own 20 didn't help.
“They're a good football team,” Okanogan coach Denny Neely
said. “You can't make mistakes against those guys.
“They've got a great running game, and they're tough up front.”
Scottie Nelson led the Colfax charge with 189 yards on 17 carries,
including four short touchdown runs — all from four yards or less.
Okanogan rode the arm of Eric Smith back into contention. He
completed 17 of 29 passes for three touchdowns. Smith's 281 yards were the
most by an Okanogan quarterback dating back to at least 1996, including
the big-play days of 1999 and 2000, when the Bulldogs reached the state
title game.
The only blemish on Smith's career performance was a meaningless
interception on the last play of the game, his first turnover this season.
Chris Mills hauled in six passes for 139 yards and a TD. Ben
Goroch caught five for 110 and two scores. Lee Morrison led
Okanogan rushers with 75 yards, and Smith added 30.
